BAFA Meeting January 2018

Much of our area flooded again.  Some just moved back into their houses after Hurricane Harvey repairs! Many of our members detoured to get to the meeting but get to it they did.

Color exercises, word interpretations (morphed from journal pages we did last year), show and tell, friendship blocks viewed and exchanged (no photos taken), and new member, Vera Berry, welcomed at our meeting yesterday.  Color exercise was secondary color plus its compliment (fig. 1-5).  Our word for January was "scraps".  Interpretations were varied and interesting (fig. 6-14).  Show and Tell was shown  (fig. 15 - 23).

One of our members, Lisa Johnson, is a teacher.  She shows her "homework" to her students who say, "Awww, you have fun homework"!  Our homework for next month is our next color exercise, secondary color plus color on each side of its compliment and next word interpretation based on the word "holiday".

Friendship Blocks for Bafa Members

Some members of Bafa agreed to participate in a friendship block challenge with fellow members.  Each individual set their own rules for their own chosen theme.  Eleven members signed up to do it so it will go for 11 or 12 months, after which each participant will set and quilt the results.  Each quilt will then be photographed for the record and exhibited at a later date.  Below are the ones I have done so far.  Jean's theme, Buttons, featured handpainted buttons (fig. 1).  Lisa's theme, Pond Life, (fig. 2)., featured a red dragonfly from my own pond memory of my own red dragonfly who returned to the same plant every year.  Sherry's theme was Vintage Linen (fig. 3).  I used vintage in the center (stitcher unknown) then cut the corners from a linen napkin and worked the corners myself using lace and pearl cotton.  There is leftover hexagon's and lots of thread work on Sylvia's flowers (fig. 4-6).  I created a stamp for Jerry's Shamrocks (fig. 7) and thread painted over an acrylic ink under painting for Dot's Kookaburra (fig. 8).  For Susan's Poppy, I did bead work on wool (fig. 9), my least favorite process so far although I have enjoyed exploring the various stitch and paint possibilities .  Cathy's Passenger Pidgeon was thread painted then stitched to a stamped background (fig. 10).  Lydie's Gifts came from France in a balloon invented in France and first flown in 1783 (fig. 11).  Block Exchange is now done and groups are shown below (fig. 12-21).  Finished quilts to be posted as they are shown to the group.

Say Cheese 2017

This year's Sew Piecefull Bee exchange work turned out to be one of two challenges-to-self for the year.  It features two deer from two photos taken through the window at Quilter's Cabin by Jenni Beaumont (used with her permission) while we were there on retreat.  I drew them the old fashioned way creating a grid on a 4" x 6" photo then drawing a cartoon out by hand on a larger grid.  I then decided it wasn't large enough so took it to FedEx and enlarged the cartoon.  After transferring the image to white muslin, I began painting.  I mixed the use of watercolor blocks and pencils with acrylic pigmented ink.  The painted deer then were machine appliqued onto a pieced and appliqued background embellished with dyed cheesecloth and thread trash.  Since they definitely looked like deer caught in the headlights, I called the finished work Say Cheese (figure 1).  It was made for fellow SPB member, James Bridges.  I had too much fun with this one.  I think I will try a stag next.

Bafa Members Work, December, 2017

Members met to share work and pass on friendship block work (to be shown later when projects are complete).  Color exercises were shown and discussed.  In conjunction with the exercise, Nancy B. Dickey, showed a finished work she had created in complimentary colors (fig. 1-2).  Also, work-in-progress (fig. 3-6), classwork (fig. 7-9) and other finished work was shown and shared (fig. 10-13).
